Forum Like button (archived by NightFall)
#11
Can someone explain why you guys all say: "when you have a like button you also need a dislike button"?
Why do you need a dislike button? I can see what you mean if you think in the way of voting and such.
But it's not a voting mechanism, it's just showing that you appreciate what the guy/woman wrote.

Yea you can use the +1 emoji but that's such a waste of post place/forum room, that could be used for good/on point comments/recommendations. I think/hope the like button can keep topics short informatic and to the point. And not 100 pages long with only 1 decent post per page and 90 posts all like "+1" things.

I'm not sure which is funner.
Saying there should be a dislike button aswell, or saying that adding a like button will make our forum like Facebook.

I think the funniest here is somebody posting several comments without any arguments which could make the discussion more useful.

Anyway, I would like to suggest something similar. For example when somebody has found a solution to a problem we could mark the thread as solved. So others could profit.

@Subzero
I understand your point and you are not wrong but have you ever seen a post here with more than one or two "+1" answers? I don't think that this is needed here. Besides I don't like the concept of collecting as many "likes" as possible and surely there would be people doing that here. A good post should be underlined with even more arguments from another poster and not liked because of a bad placed joke from a popular member. This would be just nonsense.

Boy, many people can make a mountain out of a molehill...
I don't see the huge controversy about just a simple "Like" button here. Seeing people to "just reply and put a +1 smiley there", well, that I was trying to avoid with a like button, to avoid spam posts like that.

Why would there be a dislike button anyways if there was a like button, to show negativity, which you're trying to avoid in the most ways?

As I've said before: our friendly neighbors at EA have been using this like system for quite some time now, and I've never seen something "bad" happen with it, while you can use the button on literally every post. There's never been a controversy, whatsoever about it. So why think it's bad, when you've never even tried it?

It's not my job to decide that Biggrin Testing it would be an idea which, of course, we could decide all together in a democratic way. The +1 answers would disappear, okay! And in some cases there is just nothing to add to a good post. But our forum is not really a mess to make changes immediately. In my opinion the improvement would not really be noticed. This is what I think and if the Admins decide to include the button I won't protest either Biggrin

The reason people ask for a dislike button if there is a like button is, in my opinion, the same reason facebook recently thought about adding a dislike button: discrimination. Its a hard word and maybe a bit overpowered here, but it breaks down the reasons to one very simple thing. It is easy for you to like sth if you can just do it by the click of a button, but if you dislike something you do not have the same chance but have to go to new reply, write it down, and then post it. Its not a huge thing, it just takes a few minutes to write an answer usually, but it IS a difference and more work.

I am not completely against a dislike button, because even though we put away the e.g. negative reputation on peoples profiles, it is not the same situation here. In profiles it is indeed something personal. In threads it (should) be only about the post someone made, not the whole character of someone. Still, i doubt people would be happy to see dislikes on their own post without knowing why.

And thats what brings me to my next, most important point: People might not WANT to know why someone liked their post, but just in case, imagine, if we would have a dislike button, Im sure you would want to know why someone disliked your post, aight? I think no matter what someone thinks about your post, which show your thoughts about a subject etc., you should have the right to know exactly why this person thinks whatever he/she is thinking. This way many many arguments can be prevented, because there are no or rarely any misunderstandings when it comes to the reasons and intentions of a person.

Still, I do not want to block out the pro-like-button things. We would get rid of +1 posts, which would be just amaaaazing to me. And people would not even have to go all reply-write-post-y. That saves times. And ofc we would save a lot of forum space aswell. +1 alone might not take a lot of space, but all those (usually big) signatures of ppl come in aswell.

So yeah, just like we have it in the complaint section that only involved people shall reply, and just like it is in other arguments that whatever someone posts it should add to the discussion and not be off-topic (and just a +1 or a like without a reason is off-topic for me, since it doesnt add to the discussion in a transparent way), I would not like to see like-buttons in important matters.
In every other section, like chatrooms, sport, music, games, mapping, cfg, spam and all the other subforums, I think the button would make a great addition.

@wolf actually there was a little discussion on EA forums, i'm gonna quote the most important posts here:

if you disagree with a post you should elaborate why you disagree instead of simply dislike it.
Why not both the same way, or the other way around?
People sure overcomplicate censorship.

(17-04-2015, 09:54 PM)metla Wrote: because if you like a post it means you fully agree with every point written in it, there is no need to elaborate why, because all is already written in the original post.
if you dislike it, people should know why you dislike it, so they can think about it again and maybe change (parts of) their opinion, thats called conversation.

Indeed a dislike button would have it's pro's, however, the need for talking about things we dislike is present. And I realize I'm talking away from your statement but I believe that's justified because of my own humble experience with clanlife. It's quiet easy to stamp a comment with a 'dislike' but then we'd have to force (imo) those people to present an constructive argument because we do have to get somewhere.

Agreeing with a comment implies that your opinion is voiced by someone else and that you support that, disagreeing on the other hand implies that your own view on the matter is missing (which I know you know). I believe it is of the utmost importance that we understand each others views, especially on things we dont agree with and therefor I think it'd be important to get all opinions on the table. Now, if that'd go hand in hand with a dislike button (eg 'dislike; because..') ; fair enough, make one.

edit: I'm re-reading the comments and want to go into one more thing (@nebel). I understand it when you say the presence of a 'like' button forces positiviity. Another view would be that exactly posting disagreements is stimulated because of lacking a 'dislike' button (as the only way to communicate your disagreements would be a comment).
