Team Fortress 2 Admin Tutorial
#1
Information
Hello dear members,

With the installation of the SourceMod plugin on our TF2 server there is a need to give some instructions on how to use the admin system as it might not be obvious for everyone.

Fear not, we prepared with an illustrated step-by-step guide on how to get your admin level and commands working!

Step #1: Download & Install Team Fortress 2 (seems pretty obvious but who has worked in customer service knows, that there is no such thing as "obvious" Biggrin)

Step #2: In steam, right click Team Fortress 2 and select "Properties"

Step #3: On the "General" settings tab click on "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS" and type "-console" into the popup window, then hit "Ok"

Step #4: Start your game and connect to our server (193.192.59.146:27015 - pass: testpass)

Step #5: When you are on the server hit ESC and type "sm_admin" into the console, then hit Enter and hit ESC again

Step #6: If you've done everything correctly a popup window should appear on the left side of your screen containing all the admin commands you have access to. This is called the Admin Menu and you have a Graphic User Interface for all the commands, you can navigate through it like the vChat menu in ET (please not that this is not the only way to use commands, this is just the easiest way)

Step #7: Use your commands if necessary!

Another way of using your commands is executing them from the console screen. This is an advanced feature, you need to know the exact command and the parameters for it to make it work properly, we don't recommend using this method. If you want to give it a try you can find the commands on each plugin's documentation in the plugins topic.

Currently our server has an admin structure of 3 existing levels:

Supreme: root access, has access to all commands and server settings
Admin: has access to most commands but not server settings, can mute, kick, ban
Member: has access to few commands, can mute, kick

Since TF2 uses a different method of user authentication and admin level distribution it is a little more complicated to add a user as an admin. Our SourceMod is set to the safest authentication (steamID). This requires each admin to be added to the database manually. To add an admin, we need to have their steamID (steamID is a unique ID for every steam user, there are various ways of finding out your steamID, the easiest is to use steamid.io. first copy your steam profile URL and paste it into the searchbar on the site, hit "lookup", the search will return your steam profile with lots of informations, we only need one, the "steamID" line followed by a series of letters and numbers starting with STEAM_0:x:x where "x" marks a number) We would like to ask everyone who wants to be added to this database to post your steamIDs in this thread.

If you have questions or suggestions regarding the admin system or other settings, or the explanation was unclear at some point please feel free to post it here Smile

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle. Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.”

Thanks in advance Smile
I'm quite busy, so unless it's a quick thing or really urgent I am unlikely to be able to answer PMs throughout the week, but I try to reach out to everyone who contacted me during the weekends. If it's urgent, you can also contact any of the supremes, they can do a lot of things or relay directly to me if necessary.
