Fault tolerance vs. stability (archived by Joint_PK)
#11
The CPU is not the problem at the moment, the hdd can't coop with the speed nod writes.

They are still investigating

Let them test with a SSD if possibleTongue or put the same hdd as the prev machine.

All I can say for the moment is, that the the servers, and especially ND are lagging quite a lot recently and at times it is not even playable anymore. I'm wondering, if we would stick to the new system with 1 specific IP for each server, how likely is it that these problems get fixed soon?

Also I'm wondering, why did we change from single server to more servers in first place? Is the only advantage that we have a different IP for each server, or are there more advantages?

I personally didn't have any problems with the earlier system either, so I wouldn't mind going back to that, if that is the best and fastest solution to fix the problems in the server.

Thanks for your participations so far. I'll try to add a list with arguments for either of the options.
I'm quite busy, so unless it's a quick thing or really urgent I am unlikely to be able to answer PMs throughout the week, but I try to reach out to everyone who contacted me during the weekends. If it's urgent, you can also contact any of the supremes, they can do a lot of things or relay directly to me if necessary.

I'm working with the tech support to see if there is a way to sort out all the problems.

Please see the update to my initial post for some of the reasons.

Go back to how it was with the new machine rig cause this one has much better cpu so it can handle the servers just fine on one complete machine Smile.
And maybe if its not to expensive put like between 6 to 8 gig of ram and give ND cause its the most active and highest slot server 1 gig of ram.
Cause i readed the specifications of the new Intel Xeon we have and that one is freaking awesome.
I think if you would do that, that the lag on ND once in a while with the old AMD Opteron Cpu will be gone with the Intel Xeon.

The dedicated server I would order instead of the virtual servers would be the Level 3 Linux server on this page: https://www.strato-pro.com/ger/root-server/

Code:
Intel® Xeon® E3-1230v2 (Ivy Bridge) 4 x 3,3 GHz 8 GB

The old machine was:
Code:
AMD Opteron™ 1381 4 x 2,5 GHz 4 GB

This should probably be able to run the game servers more smoothly.

However, please have a look at my first post in this thread, which I just updated with some of the arguments for and against each of the options.

All the virtual servers I can currently set up with 60€ have about 10 cores and 10 GB RAM combined (just to get you an idea of the cost/benefit ratio).

EDIT:

I would like to ask all people who asked for the pro-/contra-list to reconsider their vote based on what I added to my initial post.
If you are still unsure about which way to go, just wait some more time for me to add more to the list.
Thanks.

Well that is also a good cpu but its a bit less then the cpu we got now, but further a great cpu.
But its better then the old system, so i would go for the new rootserver with Intel Xeon.
For the people who want to see some spefications here are the results from AMD and Intel

i go with old system servers Smile

If the new systems are able to be fixed, then it would be much better than the old systems. Or, maybe we could run on the old systems, and meanwhile ask the guys at Strato to continue working for a fix for the issue, and as it is fixed, port to the new systems.

For me, I prefer stability due to my very high ping (350+).
But for the clan, majority have a low ping which obviously correlates with great stability.
So fault tolerance would be my preferred choice.

Sorry, but since the server change I've seen more problems with the server (ND) and more people getting bothered by these problems, I hope you can take the descision quickly, so we can go back to normal, because this will cause guests leaving..
