TurbO's Panzerwar ''Tutorial''
#1
Heya, apparently few people think that I'm good in panzerwar and I got asked to make something like tutorial, so here I am.
If you are completely unfamiliar with panzerwar overall, I suggest you to take a good look at Zone's tutorial, which is more about basics of pw.
My ''tutorial'' will be mainly about my own gameplay and 'tactics', which people seem to call somewhat good.

Lets start with aiming:
Well as you already know, in pw you have to aim and shoot where your opponent will be, not where he currently is.
What makes this hard is dodging aka moving right and left in the air. What I do is try to anticipate where the enemy will be. Sometimes this can easily be done if your opponent is moving in the same pattern most of the time.
If your opponents movements are totally random or ''wisely paced'' and you are having hard time hitting him, pretty much all you can do if shoot somewhere near him and hope that the bullet lands on the right face.

So called ground shooting is also fairly effective option.
Ground shooting (''grounding'' for short) is just what it sounds like, when your opponent lands on the ground you shoot as close as him as possible. Usually this will cause him to fly very low for a little while, he can't jump so it will be perfect opportunity to land other shot near him. Most likely 2 shots near the enemy will be enough to kill him. It works better on high gravity maps, since in low gravity maps people mostly fly around.
Most of the players consider ''grounding'' somewhat nooby and like to whine about it, but its your choice if you want to use it or not (I use it too sometimes).

Next up is dodging:
Basicly its just moving left and right in the air.
I also like to use mouse movement to boost my speed, might aswell call it strafing (basicly how tricjumpers move to get more speed).

It might look hard but its extremely easy if you practise for a while.
My movements in pw could be called ''totally random or wisely paced'' since I dont have any common pattern of moving. In fact I dont even really think about how I move.
It may sound bit weird, but it works (most of the time Biggrin), atleast for me.

Now lets focus on styles of playing:
There are two general types of playing which I would call:

Rushing, as you might guess, you literally rush against enemy team and depending on how good you are, get as much kills as possible.

And opposite of rushing, I shall call it ''passive playing'' for now. Most efficient on two-sided maps. You basicly stay on your own teams side of the map and try to take out your enemies from a distance.
Also countering so called ''rushers'' is a common task. Might maybe feel little bit like camping sometimes.

Usually people play both styles and/or variations of them. Those two styles are only the extremitys of gameplay.

How do I play? Maybe its not a surprise, I play both of them and ofc trying something new from time to time.

Now that we are done with the more serious stuff, i'll talk about some random things to try :P

Pressing C (crouch for default) makes you more accurate. Sometimes it really feels like it 0_o

The one thing I do in PW quite a lot is 360's. When I started doing them I noticed that quite few guys at PW took liking to it.
I dont know if others have some special reason for it, but I mainly do it because I sometimes get quite lucky after few spins Wink

Listening to music is always good. I do so pretty much always when im playing pw, get some streaks in rhythm and you will feel like a god Biggrin

And there is one very important thing. DO NOT RAGE.
Even if that evil pro is cleaning the floor with your face, raging and whining wont help at all.
Actually you will most likely end up playing even worse.

This ended up pretty long, hope you enjoy reading it and maybe even learn something. Wink

P.S. Might edit this many times <.<

Raging is not good, it gets you nowhere. :P (as far as I know)

I'm listening to the music quite a lot, too. Doesn't seem to be helping. What kind of music are you listening to?

Good job Turbo! I'm afraid there will be more pros in PW very soon.

Thank you very much for this tutorial!
I can say too, that it is very useful to hear music to be more relaxed!

Nice tut!

I already noticed that you're pretty much randomising many things while speccing you. I recorded some gameplay of myself/others and looked for things I could improve. I'd like to share those things with the others aswell;

Quote:The thing that's of uttermost importance, is what Turbo refers to as dodging. You can have the best "panzerwar aim" in the world, as soon as you end up in a 1 vs 2 situation (and of course that will happen), you will fail if you cannot dodge. Turbo says he is dodging how his intuition makes his feel, but for the "not so experienced as Turbo" players, I'll try to explain the basics:

The "basic dodge" is easy and simple; You jump to the left, and at one point, you push your D button (in case of a WASD setting) and move right. Enemies that expect you to go left miss you because halfway you go right.

However, with the somewhat more experienced panzerwar players that you will fight against, this basic dodge isn't enough. They will wait some milliseconds more to see what you are doing and they will see that you try to trick them. They will fire slightly to the right (in case of my example). The solution for this is the "double dodge"; You jump to the left, then go right, but then go left again. This causes the enemy to miss you.

Like in these two examples, the key to 'surviving' is doing what your enemy doesn't expect you to do. Some other examples:
  • Once you touch the ground while in a 1 vs 1 fight, strafe a few times before jumping again.
  • Push your enemy to avoid those akward toe to toe situations.
  • Rush forward and then jump back.
  • Move underneath your opponent to flank him.
I hate it to use terms as "double dodge", but I only try to use them to make it more clear.

Quote:Next thing I noticed about me playing was; I continuously shoot and try to hit my enemy. This was different than some other PW players. I specced them and I soon realised what my problem was (still is).
Take your time to aim. Most people, (un)awarely, already dodge like I explained. Take your time to see what they are doing. If you shoot too early, you can't shoot for another x milliseconds, which probably include the moment you have the best chance to hit your enemy.
If an enemy is going left in a jump, just wait a tick to check if he (/she) is going to move right again.
This short moment of waiting has to be aimed precise. You shoot too early, you could miss. You wait too long, you're dead.

Quote:When playing with a small ammount of players, try to keep in mind where your enemies are and try to keep them in front of you to avoid getting shot in the back.
If you have to have an enemy in the back in order to shoot another, keep that in mind and dodge even when the enemy your facing isn't shooting yet.
Myself, I prefer playing myself against 3 others than doing a 2 vs 2. In 1 vs 3, I know for sure that all my enemies are focusing on me, and I don't have to expect nasty surprises. In a 2 vs 2 fight however, an enemy might decide to change his focus from my teammate to me, resulting in me getting shot in the back (again).

Quote:I'd like to end this post with a short tutorial by myself. A tutorial to beat Turbo ^^
  • Dodge! Like your read in Turbos post, if he doesn't know where you are going, he is guessing it. That gives you a 50% chance of surviving if you dodge properly.
  • Turbo is a nasty bugger when it comes to dodging. Pay attention to his movements and try to aim properly before shooting.
  • Avoid situations where Turbo is ready to shoot (try to time it) and you are floating still in mid air because you were dodging. Always have enough speed!
