All is said in the title, my main SSD is dying...

When I bought my ThinkStation, the vendor let two SSDs inside, a Samsung PRO 240 and a Samsung EVO 120.
The ThinkStation was used as a server, 24/7 full charge for 3 years (2015-2018).

So the SSDs are 5 years old now, but start to show hardware failure.
It started about 2 months ago, with some troubles when booting, sometimes with normal booting, sometimes with a 3x or 4x long boot delay...
A month ago, I had a storage hardware failure bsod when booting.

And today, the system crashed, and when booting, only a black screen showed up.
Only a black screen, and a mouse cursor, nothing else.
I had to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to access the task manager, launched cmd then the system file recovery.

Fixed for now, but for how long ?
Damn, I have to buy a new SSD...

Hey fellow software engineers and programmers.
I have been assigned a task at my university where I need to create a genetic algorithm in python and adapt it to a practical problem that I haven't been assigned yet.

Before tackling that project my tutor asked me to create a simple crossover function where we can see that I choose two parents, so that a random crossover point between those two parents happens and that I get two offspring.
I am quite loss with that.
Has someone any idea of how to create such a small program?
The language it has to be written in is python 3 (as title states)

Hi everyone.

Today, I decided to install Windows 10.
Everything goes right, except for Chrome.

I never encountered any trouble with Chrome on Windows 7, but with my fresh Windows 10 install, Chrome cannot download big files, bigger than 50 MB.

With any files over 50 MB, Chrome freezes at ~70% of the download.
And a big freeze, no response at all, I must use the Task Manager to force Chrome to quit.

I tried to clean the cache, temporary files, to uninstall and reinstall Chrome, nope.

No trouble to download files with Firefox or Edge, so it's not a big trouble, but still...
Weird. Does anybody have a idea ?

Hi everybody !

Yesterday, I played ET and after that, I played Age of Empires III.
I was playing for about 3 hours when a smell appeared, a burning smell
I quitted the game, the GeForce 8500 GT was at 74 °C.
I forced the fan to full speed, and 30 seconds later, the temp of the GPU was 64 °C, and no more burning smell.
I definitively don't want to play with a video card that could fire, literaly !
So today, I bought a new video card : exit 8500 GT, welcome GT 710.

But the install was a pain in the ass...
I tried to boot on HDMI, but... no boot, black screen, nothing, the HDD doesn't start, the BIOS doesn't even display anything !
OK, let's try the good old VGA style... but... wait... VGA ?
It's not supposed to have VGA : on the box, it's written D-Sub, not VGA ! Oh, anyway...
Ah, VGA was the good option, now I can boot
And I can boot in a... 800x600 resolution
So now, we need to change the resolution, and... 1280x1024 is the max ???

OK, seems pretty clear it's time to install a driver, right ?
Oh crap ! The box says 300 Mb available on the HDD...
But the install software says something about 3.7 Gb !!!

Good, now the install process is launched, and...
Oh my god ! it tooks 20 minutes to install it ! and the MSI install software is so slow, so heavy, even Windows is lagging
And now I need to reboot !
But the driver is installed, right ? or almost... So let's try another HDMI-style boot.

Naaah, it works : HDMI boot, full HD resolution, everything is fine...
But of course, an update is available and needed...
Ok, so download and install... 32 minutes ! Come on !
And after that, another reboot is needed ! COME ON !!!

Woah, that was really painful, but finally, it works !
It took almost one hour to install the driver and update it.
Now it's time to test it...
I tried the UserBenchmark software, the GT 710 is something like 4 times faster than the 8500 GT

And of course, I tried with ET...
Too bad I didn't checked the FPS with the old card...
But here is what I've got now :

MSI nVidia GeForce GT 710
RAM 2 Gb DDR3
--------------------------------
Wolfenstein Enemy Territory
--------------------------------
Minimum 60 FPS
Maximum 125 FPS
Average 100 FPS

A 100 FPS AVERAGE ???
NOW WE'RE TALKING !!!
I think I will re-install the 8500 one of these days, just to check the FPS with ET...

Well, this GT 710 is a 42 € video card, and even if it was a hard-time struggle-install, it was worth to change !
It's a new world, really ! It provide a smooth, fluid gaming experience, just perfect.

OK Folks, that's it for today, daytime story over

Few days ago, I wrote a thread to tell how crappy the nVidia 8500 GT is.
But, I still wanted to use it, so I decided to overclock the PC.

I tried to overclock the Core Quad Q6600, but it seems impossible, since the BIOS doesn't have any option for that.
I downloaded a small overclock software named SetFSB : a good software which can change the FSB, but unfortunaly, not the Core voltage.
So, I was able to overclock the CPU from 2.4 GHz to 3 GHz, but the system crashed something like 5 seconds later, cause the CPU voltage was too high.
And after rebooting, the BIOS froze and gave me an unique option : reset the CPU values.

Then, I tried to overclock the GPU, nVidia 8500 GT.
I downloaded MSI AfterBurner, a GPU overclock software.
Really easy tu use, and works perfectly.
After several attemps, I managed to overclock the 8500 GT, and found the limits for this GPU :

GPU Core clock : 475 MHz before, 620 MHz after.

GPU Memory speed : 475 MHz before, 575 MHz after.

I made a few bench tests after that, and it seems that the GPU gained about 25 % power/speed.

Ahhh, now we're talking : with a 25% gain, the GPU seems to wake up.
Now I can play Age of Empires III and Enemy Territory.
The games are not as fluid as with my laptop and its Radeon 3650, but still, they are fluid enough to play with
So now, since the desktop is directly plugged to the TV, I can play on my 40" HDTV, and that's way much better than to play on my laptop 15" screen

SPECTRE & MELTDOWN

Here's a great start to 2018: 99% of all processors in use today have design flaws that makes them vulnerable to attacks.

Researchers have found 2 bugs/design flaws that combined impact pretty much all processors in use today. This means that your PC, laptop, server and phone ARE AFFECTED by these bugs. Both of these bugs allow hackers to read information from the memory. THIS CAN INCLUDE PASSWORDS AND OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION. There are 3 variants (variant 3 has a sub variant) of attacks. 1) Bounds check bypass [Spectre], 2) Branch target injection [Spectre], 3) Rogue data cache load [Meltdown]. Spectre attacks affect almost ALL MODERN CPUs, while Meltdown "only" affects Intel CPUs starting from 1995 and some ARM cores... These hardware bugs are basically caused by technically a design flaw in the modern CPU architectures, where Meltdown is specifically on x86 architecture. The extra bad news is that the global fix for Meltdown that has already been implemented to all major OSs will lead to performance decreases on all Intel CPUs, especially pre-2010 models. More on this in the Meltdown section.

SPECTRE:
What? - Spectre breaks the isolation between applications. This means that a harmful application exploiting spectre could read information from memory and hence from other apps. Even though the applications are coded by today's standards for optimized security, Spectre can actually benefit from this. Spectre is harder to exploit, but also harder to fix.
Affects? - All AMD, Intel, ARM CPUs. Yes. ALL OF THEM.
Fix? - Software patches. VERY hard to fix and a 100% fix is probably impossible.

MELTDOWN:
What: Meltdown breaks the isolation between user applications and the operating system. This allows the exploit to read information from the memory, thus making it possible to gain information from others applications running in memory, which might include passwords etc.
Affects: All Intel CPUs from 1995-> (excluding Itanium and Atom before 2013). ARM: Cortex-A75. (Variant 3a also Cortex-A15-, A57- ja A72). AMD not affected.
Fix: KPTI (Kernel Page Table Isolation). This means that the kernel memory is completely isolated. This is done via Operating system patches / updates + microcode / firmware update. The Linux kernel has already been patched for this exploit, and an emergency Microsoft update KB4056892 has been released, that implements the first step of the fix. However this is a hardware bug/flaw, which means that Intel has to also issue some sort of microcode / firmware update to completely fix this. Note that the Windows Update is not being enabled on all PCs because it's NOT COMPATIBLE with most anti virus software. More on this as the story unfolds. And now for the worst news.
Performance degradation: The KPTI fix will lead to performance degradation on the Intel x86 platform. There are no proper tests of the amounts of performance degradations of yet, but they can be expected to range from virtually nothing to almost 30% in cases where a lot of CPU I/O calls are being made. This means that for gaming and general usage the performance degradation shouldn't be that noticeable, but for special high I/O workloads like certain SQL functions ran with the fix resulted in up to 23% performance degradation.

TL;DR
All modern CPUs have a hardware bug / design flaw that makes them vulnerable to two different exploits. The exploits can be used to (for example) read passwords from the memory.
How to prevent Windows 10 from auto-restarting for updates

Ahh, the wonders of Windows 10. The way Windows 10 forces updates unless you disable them manually one by one with an external tool, or with Windows Pro is quite something. As a poweruser I like to configure these kind of things myself, for a good reason.

Windows 10 will quietly install updates in the background, depending on your settings. In the latest versions of Windows 10, there are "active hours" that you can set, so that Windows 10 won't restart the computer after the updates, unless the time is outside of "active hours". And of course these can't be disable by normal means, and they can only be set for 12 hours. There used to be options in Windows 10 Pro where you can tweak these further, and even disable updates entirely, but that has been removed by Microsoft... Because fuck you, that's why.

This results in the following: if you leave your PC idle during the time that's not set as "active hours" Windows 10 will reboot your PC and finish the updates.
This might not be much of a problem for "normal" users, but it sure has been for me. I went searching for some tweak on how to disable this after I left my PC on for the night to download some movies linux distros, important browser tabs open... And woke up to a restarted PC with uncompleted downloads and all shit I had on closed.
I tried various methods but as the lovely folks @Microsoft noticed people stopping this and using whatever they could to disable updates and the annoying auto restart, they of course added a bunch of things in Anniversary Update that disabled the GroupPolicy & registry tweaks... But luckily there is one way of disabling it that they likely can't patch in the future either.

NOTE: This only disabled Windows Update's ability to restart your PC. This also means that updates won't completely install before you restart your PC. Updates will still be downloaded and "pre-installed" according to your settings.
NOTE2: This works in any version of Windows 10: Home, Pro, Enterprise...

1) Open Task scheduler
Start menu -> Type in task and Task scheduler should be the first option, even if your windows is not set to english. Or press Windows button + R and type in taskschd.msc and press enter

2) On the left, navigate to Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> UpdateOrchestrator

3) Right click the task Reboot on the middle panel and choose Disable
now the task status should say Disabled on it

Now if we leave it like this, Windows will automatically try and re-enable the task... Let's disable this also.

2) On the left, navigate to Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> UpdateOrchestrator
- I'd rather not spend more than 350 euros.

- I prefer windows but idc which version.

- I'll mainly use it for word, excel and browsing the internet.

- The laptop is not meant for gaming but i wouldn't mind if it could run something like the original Bioshock (which is a game from 2007).

- I'd prefer it if the fan isn't on the left side or if it doesn't get hot quickly since im left handed (fuck the old laptop).

I hope you guys can help me since i know close to nothing about laptops.

Hey guys,

I want to build my own computer (gaming) but I don't really know how to start.
Because I don't really know what's out there for parts etc.
I do have a link ( https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MGhJCy )where there is summed up what parts I kind of want in my computer,
feel free to adjust it and tell me what's good/bad. (another possible build https://www.alternate.be/html/configurat...Id=1139184)
I would like to keep the build between €800 - €1000 of cost.

Any help is welcome
You guys know where I can like put my own pc together and let it get made (I don't trust myself to make it)
Belgium/Europe, you guys think it would be smart to like get it made and ship?
Or is it better to search some shop closeby

Mystik:
Check stores in Belgium, maybe check some Belgian tech forum what people are ordering from. I just know alternate and mediamarkt from nl/be. But check some Belgian web stores, and also NL, as they ship to BE in most cases I believe!

An example with a bit of Googling is this site: https://azerty.nl
They seem to ship to Belgium, and offer build services: https://azerty.nl/8-4777/assemblage-installatie.html

These kind of services should be the best, because you can just choose all of the components and add the build service to cart and it's all done. Also they seem to offer separate services for build or build with windows and driver install etc.

Some companies who focus in PCs and PC parts also offer some PCs themselves, like alternate's selection here: https://www.alternate.be/PCs-ALTERNATE-P...tingResult
This is the easiest way, no picking of individual components, just add to cart and done. This is also a con when you can't use offers and exact components of your choosing.

Other crap I found while Googling:
http://www.bytesatwork.be/computer-onder...steem.html
https://www.alternate.be/PC-Builder

But I would really suggest checking out some Belgian tech forum of sort, people who do this nerd shit for a living or as a hobby usually like hanging around tech forums, and are willing to help you! Because it's quite hard to say anything about local stores of another country Tongue

But if you are feeling brave, save 100€ from build service and build yourself from components, it's pretty easy with a little help from YouTube

Me:
Thanks Mystik, I should be able to do it on my own (I am an engineer) but I just want to be sure Tongue
The hard thing is like deciding what to take and what suits best etc.
I am very bad at that Smile Like I have no idea what's out there.
I would defenitly need help with that Biggrin
I just want a decent gaming desktop for about €800 - €1000

So my old microphone is dying (a lot of noise) and I need a new one. As I intend to record something, I need a microphone with good sound capture. Well to be honest, I don't know anything about microphones, so I would ask you for your opinion.

So I want to buy a cheap microphone (up to 15€ or maybe max 20€). Well I know it isn't much money, but I'd like to buy best for its price (I do belive there isn't a really good microphone for that low price). The microphone can be with headphones or just microphone.
So got any suggestions?
