Even if that Steam stuff will be long living, the increased player base won't be noticeable. Or at least not here as long as you can see FA, ETc and such clans around.

Regarding the lags and commands; I used to play with a config I googled for myself. Not sure if it's still there, but you can give it a try and get the original one.
