Basic knowledge
What is engineer? Most important class in ET - without engineers most objective maps can't be finished.
First question some people may ask - who should play engineer? Answer - patient people who don't care about stats. So if you're in love with writing your 'awesome' k/d scores or can't live without running with medpacks, don't even try engineer.
What does enginner need to know/have/do:
Rifle
Rifle is engineer type which should get most damage/kills - it's not concerned on objective as much as normal engi. It's a must have on most maps in 6v6 ETPro. Here is a video of some famous rifles (action starts at 2:50):
Basics a rifle engi should know:
Mines
In ETPro big knowledge about mines isn't required - you just need to know where and when to plant them on 6v6 maps.
However, there are some things you should know more things in public servers with Jaymod and other pub mods:

What does enginner need to know/have/do:
- objective (!!!) - most obvious thing, you need to go for objective NOT kills. So you also need to know objectives on maps you will play. Objectives done by engineers are: planting/defusing dynamites and repairing objects/vehicles like ramp or truck.
- always do your job, if you want to stop and start getting kills, switch class.
- go together with medic - in public servers it won't work in most cases but in competitions it's very important thing. Engineer should always go first so medic can immediately revive him - it's something like powerful shield.
- don't be a rambo - if there is no occasion to do objective (most opponents are alive and near obj place) just don't do it, wait for your teammmates.
- don't waste recharge, plant dynamites/mines only when necessarily and no opponent is nearby

Basics a rifle engi should know:
- be aware that firing rifle nade takes a half of rechargebar, so switch to another weapon when not needed to use it
- when attacking, you can easily kill the camping guys by shooting a rifle nade which bounces on wall. When defending, try to camp around corner with leaning (Q and E), that's the easiest way to kill opponent.
- some rifle nades explode after a bounce on surface, some explode immediately. It's dependable on time spent in air (longer = instant boom).
- there are many tricky spots to use rifle (for example in supply or goldrush), to find them out ask or watch some ETPro guys which play it
Here are some on video:

In ETPro big knowledge about mines isn't required - you just need to know where and when to plant them on 6v6 maps.
However, there are some things you should know more things in public servers with Jaymod and other pub mods:
- there are 5 kinds of mines: normal (most mods), tripmine (in ETNam, N!tmod and silentmod, you plant them on walls in specific spots), S-Mine (Jaymod, better than normal mine - it jumps in air and explodes), poison mine (Jaymod, releases poison when activated, mostly useless), AT mine (ETnam, anti-tank, 2 mines can destroy truck/tank).
- plant earth mines in zigzac or semi-circle, NOT all in same place (that's just waste of them - 1 person or vehicle can blow them all immadiately), they should be at least 4 steps far from another one.
- they should be placed to disturb enemies in the most effective way, so near tank, stealable item or any other objective place
- also plant them in surprising spots, like hole near radar parts. However experienced players may know about such spots and avoid them.
