Is it possible to change the Shoutbox? (archived by NightFall) - Poseidon - 06-08-2015

Good evening TWC,

as you all may have mentioned, our Shoutbox is getting crowded with several spam posts and even internal information such as the recent conflicts. This process leads firstly to a bad image in the eyes of our forum's guests whose number is many times higher than the active members' one. Secondly, also for us, members of TWC it is quite annoying that we all have to see these so called shouts about personal problems with other members, hackers/cheaters and so on. But this is just my opinion.

Since the question in the headline is difficult to understand I would like to suggest the following:

1. Make the Shoutbox not visible for guests (that would probably be the easiest thing to do and in addition to that it would solve my first point).

2. Improve the reportbutton feature so spam or even insulting shouts could be deleted efficiently (maybe include this as a task to a supporter's job?)

Maybe you think that it's amusing to see what is happening in our Shoutbox and that I am exxagerating but after all, it is not a battlefield to argue with others. In my opinion it should be what it is recently only sometimes: a place to chat about everything without opening an extra thread.
(Don't take the word "shout" seriously Biggrin)

Thank you for your attention.

I can answer this point, the report button will notify the MST/Supporters.
They will decide what will happen to the reported shout.
They will also delete shouts which aren't allowed in the shoutbox (such as spam and inappropriate messages)

I already know that iTim Biggrin
But I can't be the only one who thinks that there are too many discussions going on there.

Shouldn't it just be a "feel free" area where you can shout anything (as long as it's allowed by the rules)

well its abit off a mess lately and it is indeed not amusment.
and i also think that post/pic off the chat log wasnt suposed to be on there.
i like the idea, but from what i have seen it doesnt happen often and you can always ask some1 to talk on ts or steam or so on.
but indeed for hackers and trollers etc it would be nice i think!

Exactly, like i have seen some quests use it to call out cheaters that are playing in the server at that exact time. This is especially useful because not all guests have another means of contact to the admins, like their steam etc :P

RE: Is it possible to change the Shoutbox? - Poseidon - 07-08-2015

Of course you are right and if somebody spots a cheater it should be seen as soon as possible, but that's not what I meant.
I mean the recent discussion where the cought cheater was begging for a second chance while insulting other members directly in the Shoutbox.

Another suggestion could be that members can up or downvote comments as on YouTube. If for example a comment gains five downvotes it will be automatically hidden for everyone except for the MST's or other high admins who then can delete the shout once and for all.

well the cheater got kicked, and banned from the server/s so why a ban on forum before he say bad things? its always hard to prevent sush things every geust can do an insult here but ofc they know what will happen after.

i understand your point, but i think it is not good if for example 5 trolls can make a post disapear, so maybe only for members able to vote then but i still dont really see why it is needed its gone wrong like 2/3 time,s now after a year or so?
or am i not paying atention?

I think there are a few very valid points in this thread, so I'd just like to share my opinion on it as well.

First of all, as Master mentioned, it doesn't really happen too often. Yea, it's bad when it does, but is it really bad enough for us to restrict or change the way people can use the shoutbox?

Also, as much as I am a fan of voting systems like the ones used on many large sites, it really doesn't work very well on such a small scale. Even if you have a few thousand users, it's very hard to fine tune such a system to prevent abuse while still being useful for its actual purpose.

After all, I think it's very nice to see guests pop up on the shoutbox every now and then having nice conversations with our members, or just members talking to each other. I feel it's much more important to support easy communication like that than it is to be overly cautious about what might happen on there.

Of course, we'd like to see people, especially members, maintain a certain level of decency on the shoutbox, but I guess it's just in the nature of people to sometimes lose control over that. So unless there is a sudden spike in misusage of the shoutbox, I personally don't think we need to change it at all.

I agree with Lig Biggrin
