Dealing with provocateurs (archived by John) - Mimus - 29-11-2014

Hello,

I am coming to you with a quite serious matter, and I would want everyone in this clan, no matter if member, HA or higher, to read this carefully.

We have trollers ingame.
Provocateurs.
In detail, people who choose to e.g. take names that are racist, sexist, or connected to other not wanted and hurtful things.

And ofc, we have rules and a way to punish those people, usually: warn, warnmute, warnmute, kick, ban etc.
But quite some times, those people dont listen to the warns, continue after the mutes, come back with the same provoking things after the kick, and even bypass the ban.

That takes quite a lot of time from you, dealing with those people. You get annoyed because they dont listen, and everybody rages.

Day after day I hear things like: ouh, why you just kicked him? He came back and went on, just instaban him etc.

Ofc, we could just ban everyone. But we dont. Do you remember why we have this procedure with the several warns? Because we want to give those people a chance to follow our rules, to take a step back and behave in a suitable manner again.

But let me tell you something about their way of thinking as I have encountered it many times. An example:

There is someone on the server with a name that is not okay. Lets call him A. People want A to change his name because its not okay. An admin comes and tells him to change the name, lets call this admin B.

A is a person that only uses this name to provoke in a serious matter, meaning he is all serious about being mean and trying to hurt us. Everyone on the server sees that and is curious about how we will deal with A.

B is an admin who, like most of you guys, is quite strict and fast with his callouts. He tells A: Change your name! Its not okay!. And if A doesnt do what hes told within a few moments, B continues with things like: I kick you if you dont change! You will get banned! etc.

Now, ofc B doesnt do sth wrong, right? But between wrong and right there is quite a big gap. B is right with what he does, but he could do it in a different manner, too. In a way that might help to solve this situation faster and with less hurt people.

If B reacts like described above, A will usually not do as he is told. He wants to provoke, he doesnt listen, and - now comes the important thing- even if he is afraid of the consequenes like a ban from the server, he CAN NOT go back. Because that would make it look like he is inferior to the admins. People on the server will see him "fail" and laugh about him.
But A doesnt want people to laugh about him, he wants to be cool and strong and a rebel.

So, what could the admin B do to get rid of the name, but at the same time not to have the need to ban A?

And here comes the trick: Neutralize.

Admin B has to give A the feeling that its okay to change the name, that it wont make him be the inferior part of the discussion.

E.g.

A has a bad name, and admin B tells him: Hey friend, why dont you change your name to sth more cool? What about >CoolGuy< or sth?
Usually A will not want to do that, because it might look like B is trying to be kidding him. But B continues to talk to him like to a friend with whom he has a joking conversation: Hey, lets get teamnames or sth, wouldnt that be cool? blabla. Imagine any nice, light conversation here.

The thing is, neutralizing this "I am a rebel and I have to be cool and provoke and therefore I can not rename because that makes me look weak"-image by making it a "I am a provoker, but its all fun and games and its just joking and every joke reaches its end so i will just go back to usual playing"-feeling will cool down the atmosphere.

Its a way the admin can solve an issue with talking and not having to throw with punishments that will cause anger and annoy him as much as the one being punishes, while the Provoker can maintain a feeling of being on the same level with other people, and not being a weak person that fails things he tries.

_____________

That was an example of how members should work when we talk about rather talking than just punishing. And I would be more than happy if everyone could try and act like this.

Ofc it will be hard, and not every time person A will gratefully take this chance. Sometimes it will just be needed to punish someone. But even a slight amount of discussions solved in such calm, happy manner would be worth it, dont you think?

I totally agree with you on this one!

I never ask anyone to change their name. I dont think we have a rule about this. not that we need one to act. If someone has a name to provoke. let him.... simple. its hard to get offended by that. if his name is TWC|FCKCLAN-andihateyouall.
fine by me.... it says something about the player and not about our clan!

Players often get into an argument. when I warn or splat them for spawnkilling. I often get called "uptight" but mostly worse. I choose not to go into a debate. I stat the facts. We have our rules. players need to keep them, admin needs to maintain them. just follow rules and we'll be fine. I will not respond to FU's and blabla admins. atleast not right away. I will repeat the rule in question. Spawnkilling with panzer is not allowed. please read our rules on our forum about spawnkill-borders.

When his whining it trying to provoke me and or my fellow clan m8's it becomes a different story. We don't want players picking fights and try to push buttons after me made clear in a polite manner what we mean. To many FU's and fck your bleepbleepblabla shows that someone will not stop untill actions is taken. And here is the hard part. Try not to get upset but do your job. act like a professional. do not get mad but act! warn him. "Ingame is not the place to have discussions. We have a forum for that."
"!warn [player] stop provoking or you will get muted kicked". mostly a !kick follows soon, because when somoene is taking it to far, its quite obvious. make sure you have prove. make screenshots or even better use the "/condump [namefile].txt" cmd. that will store all text in console screen.

so to summarize:

keep your head cool.
be professional.
don't act unless you have to.
get prove

i never expected a post like this but i sure agree with it as it should work unless person A is pure nobhead

No matter what game you play there will always be people like this, just act mature enough to deal with it =)
