How to speed up your computer! [Simple][Windows 7] - Alduin - 30-05-2013

Hi, as you might know, I am Alduin from No Download. ^^
I came up with an idea to make a tutorial of how to speed up your computer,
because I thought about that a lot of members might have a slow computer, which could be a reason of inactivity. It's nicer to play with a fast computer, believe me, I experienced it! Biggrin
As I made it clear in the titel, I am using Windows 7. Sometimes you might get confused, but it should be similar with the other ones.
(I'll make the text colorfull, that'll make it more exiting and regulated.)

-I am not responsible if you have made a mess of your computer-
This tutorial will have 2 bases: Things you'll do manual, and things programs will do for you. You should first read the whole post before doing something.

<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>

--~~ Things you do manually. ~~--

1~ Deleting unnecesary files
1. If you go to your Downloads folder, you should delete
all the unnecesary files like old .ZIP files, programs you don't use ETC. These are the stuffs that you downloaded though the Internet (Duuuuuuhhh), they always leave things behind!
2. Go to your Control Panel, and then to Programs and Features.
Uninstall the things you don't like on your computer like boring games, toolbars, whatever.

2~ Speeding up (your start-up).
1. Click on start, and click on the empty bar below. Enter ' msconfig ' and hit enter. Go to Start up and uncheck programs that you won't use right after the startup.
2. We need to be again on Msconfig. Go to services, check Hide all microsoft services (below) and then uncheck the programs you don't want to run automaticly.
3. Delete shortcuts on your desktop of programs that you do not use often, they slow down the start. Although, they can be found in Start/Computer again.
4. If you have a really old computer, you can change your theme to the classis windows. It will be a lot faster, apart from the old classic design.
(You go to start, control panel, and slightly on the right you'll find something like 'Edit your theme'.)

3~ Defragmenting your computer
1. Go to start, click on the empty bar below and type 'Disk defrag' don't hit enter, just click on something that should be a program of windows that is closely called like Disk defragmentor.
This will maybe take a long time, but it will speed up opening files.

4~ Adding RAM memory
Adding RAM memory to your computer will make a big difference, but you'll have to buy a RAM memory card ofcourse. You cannot install one. I recommend to have at least 2GB of memory, how do to this can be found on youtube.

--~~ Programs that help you. ~~--

1~ Tune Up Utilities 2013.
This is a great program, you can do a lot of things (including the ones written above) with this awesome program. Unfortunately for you, it is not a free program. But you can download the trial. (This is not an antivirus.) For more information, go to: http://www.tune-up.com/

2~ CCleaner.
This is once again a great program, it cleans a lot of unnecesary files and can do much more than that. Fortunately for you, this program is free! Smile (There exists a version you must buy) For more information, go to: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

3~ AVG Antivirus 2013.
This is a very good program either (Otherwise I wouldn't show this to you xD), it's a good and protective Antivirus with much more features. You have a free version, but also one that you must purchase. For more information, go to: http://free.avg.com

4~ Razer Game Booster.
This is a pretty good program to use for games. When you activate the program it will temporary disable all unecesary processes that slow down your gameplay, and it is free! Biggrin For more information, go to: http://www.razerzone.com/gamebooster

<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>~<~>

This was my simple tutorial about how to speed up your computer. I hope you enjoyed it, and that I gave enough information that it helped. Wink

Some programs were suggested to me by AgentHani, I'll share the credits with him ! Biggrin

I also recommend you to scan/clean your PC at least twice in a week to keep it clean. Wink

RE: How to speed up your computer! [Simple] [Windows 7] - Sky - 30-05-2013

Great tutorial Alduin Wink

I recommend CCleaner too, as it has a lot of usefull functions to quickly delete your useless files, de-activate startup programs, and that kind of stuff.

But about Razer Game Booster, tbh it didn't change anything to me (altho i have a pretty fast pc, but i tought it could make it run even faster)
and few people who tried it (for example Nacht) told me it didn't work either. even after i helped him to configure it for him
SO, idk about this one tbh Wink

Also I want to add that adding more RAM memory is not very usefull to play ET, unless you like to have 1000000000 programs open at the same time Tongue
cause ET will never take more than 300-400mb of RAM. So technically 512mb of ram would be enough Tongue (i don't recommend it tho xD)

But great tutorial, written very clearly, nice job

RE: How to speed up your computer! [Simple] [Windows 7] - Rote - 30-05-2013

Very nice tutorial, good points. I want to add some other opinions also in this comment which could help bit more.

-About deleting, also too many shortcuts on desktop makes PC slower at startups, so less important on desktop can be deleted and your PC will load it faster at startup. After you install any program, delete those setups, you dont need them after installation and they took space always from disk for nothing.
-More RAM memory helps only when it isn't full, after RAM becomes full it cannot store temporary memory more, so this is why more RAM would help with longer PC sessions, also RAM speed can be clocked from usually 1333MHz to 1600MHz which shows little difference after all. If you got HyperX memory, it usually heats more than other RAM's (Yes, got them) RAM coolers can be installed, but kinda still not so necessary stuff.
-Processor helps lot in this case, your game performance depends how fast your CPU can type binarycode (this is 1100 1010 stuff that processor does) when running programs.
If you run ET first time, it stores binaries to RAM memory, and at second startup it can find it again from RAM so it is starting little bit faster, you might know programs start slower when using first time after PC start.
-Windows 7 theme can be heavy one to run with laptops and other little bit not so powerful PC's, changing theme to original windows might help, it starts lot faster and doesn't use CPU so much, its simply lighter to use.
-AVG is good antivirus, I got avast and it works also very fine - and its free, thats one you should also try if you dont prefer AVG. If you want to pay for antivirus, get F-Secure or Avast Pro.
Remember to update antiviruses or set it to automatical mode, recommendation of full-scans would be kinda 1-2 times at week (Btw use Chrome as browser, it does best cooperative with antiviruses and is light to use)
-Close unnecessary tasks from background (Tap shift+ctrl+esc) from task manager, they might use your CPU much and also connection speed is lowered, remember - dont close stuff you dont know what they are! Closing stuff like for example explorer.exe will stop your resource management (leaves only wallpaper, nothing else stays) if you accidentally do this, open task manager (shift+ctrl+esc OR ctrl+alt+del) and tap "new task" and type in explorer.exe so you dont need to shut down PC, unsaved files cannot be restored. So simply just do not close stuff that are important/you dont know, if you got tasks at background you want to close (and want to close at every startup), open empty txt file, type in: taskkill -f -t -im processname.exe
Save it as anything.bat and place it to your startup folder at C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Now those programs will be closed every time you start up your PC.

Maybe will edit this later when got new tips, +1 Alduin he made this thread, people can give tips for those who need them. :P

RE: How to speed up your computer! [Simple] [Windows 7] - Alduin - 31-05-2013

Thank you so much for those positive comments. Biggrin
@Razer Game booster, you'll see the difference when you play a game you can barely play, games like WolfET only require 128 MB Ram Memory, that is really nothing Smile

@Rote, Yes that about shortcuts is true too, I will edit it. Biggrin
And everything you just said, can be done with Tune Up Utilities :P, I also saw that orginal windows thing in the program, but I don't like it.
I'll recommend it for people who have really slow PC's.

My point was also to prevent it of being like a Schindler's List. :P But thank you, I'll look what I can add Biggrin

RE: How to speed up your computer! [Simple][Windows 7] - Hani - 31-05-2013

Tune Up Utilites Fix Programs, bugs, glitches, crashes, cleans, boosts,Helps,Saves and can do everything,
I have tune up utilieis 2012 for 3 years and my pc has no problems at all !.
There is 1 thing that also slows down ur pc..
U must disable the start up programs, they are slowing ur pc,
But in tune up utilties there is a mode called:"Turbo Mode"
When u click that turbo mode, your pc will change and become FASTER,
but no worries you can make it back to normal mode.

I just prefer Tune Up Utilties Wink

If you have problems in ur pc i can do it Biggrin
I can do it by the help of team viewer Smile.

Razer Game Booster does work on games you can't run very well. Example: Minecraft.

However imo it's useless for games you can run fine without problems.
