Homework - Puitje - 09-11-2012

Hey guys!
For school i received a really big task and i really need your help with this one Sad

I'll try to explain it as good as possible.

So imagine you have a business with 50 people:
- 3 management
- 3 bookkeeping
- 10 administration
- 4 marketing
- 5 design
- 25 exploitation

You need to put up all the IT stuff like computers and servers.

I need to figure out what kind and how many computers (laptops, desktops), servers, printers i need.

The hard part is that i need to know what kind op laptop you need (Dell, HP,....) and for the servers i need to know the specifications (like a print server needs more memory) and how much it would cost each.

The teacher really wanted to f*ck us so he said we needed to make 3 suggestions how we would set this up Pcsmash

I kinda hoped you guys could help me with this Shy

Thx in advance!

Let me try to help you with that.

1. The important part with picking a certain type of hardware or software is knowing how it is going to be used.
There is no point comparing numbers (price, benchmarks, tests), because those tests are usually quite general and not specific
to a certain usage scenario.

That said, you should probably ask someone who is responsible for a real world setup similar to that. Those guys are usually called
system administrators. Like someone at your parents' workplace or your school or some university.

This might not help you, but: the task you were given is basically impossible to solve perfectly, because it requires some real world experience.
I'm not sure about that, but maybe your teacher only wants to hear a strategy that might help you finding the right setup.

For example, I'd say that managers will probably need laptops to be mobile. Business laptops are fairly cheap and will do fine, because most enterprises use terminal servers anyways.

Bookkeepers need small work stations as well (small meaning computers somewhere between 400-600€).

Administrators will probably need computers somewhere in the range of 500-800€ and they are likely to prefer having two monitors each.

Marketing, design and exploitation will probably need small work stations as well, unless they are doing graphics stuff. If I am not mistaken, most designers use big apple computers with touch screens and stuff.

As for servers, I can provide you with a real world setup, even though it's probably a little smaller than what you need.
My father is a tax advisor and runs an office with about 10 employees. They have one large network printer (your case might require two), and several smaller printers at some of the work stations (so they don't need to use the big/fast printer, when they just need to print a page or two).

Two servers, one terminal server that has all the software needed for the employees' work and a file server that holds all the data.

The employees use their workstations to connect to the terminal server via remote desktop (RDP) and do their work over there (hence the cheap computers, because they are used only to connect to the terminal server).

Also, they use special network equipment that allows them to deploy easy VPN so my father can connect to the terminal server from anywhere using his laptop to access all his work data.

But that is just one possible setup, and I still think it's more about the way of evaluating these sort of things. Look at the requirements, check specifications and make a decision based on that.

Thank you very much!
For the employees i kinda knew in what direction i had to look, but i only have some problems with finding the right servers.
I don't have much experience in this so i don't know what kind of specifications each server needs to be functional in a business.

Again, thank you Ligustah

This is like you guys would speak Chinese. :P

Anyway, good luck with your homework Puitje.

For servers there are several considerations to make.

For example, if you have many users that use stuff like office software, your terminal server won't need powerful CPUs. Cheap quad core servers with moderate Ghz will do perfectly fine.
You should, however, have a considerably amount of RAM, like 16-32GB, depending on the number of users connected to your terminal server.
The file server should have low CPU and RAM but very fast disks to allow for speedy file transfers.

That's about it. (also most enterprises use Windows servers)

Ok,
thank you very much Lingustah!

RE: Homework - Dope - 03-12-2012

I'm not gonna mingle into this, and i sure wish you good luck with your project but maybe 1 of your options should include cloud computing, it can save lots of money by building up your infrastructure like that.

Just my 2 cents!

Grtz...................

edit: just saw that ligustah offered a somewhat same option as i'm declaring here, so forget my option Biggrin
